Indonesia

With thousands of islands that all have a unique identity, there is always something new to discover. Home to hundreds of ethinic groups speaking many different languages, Indonesia is known for beaches, volcanoes, Komodo dragons, orangutans and tigers. Also home to vibrant cities like Jarkata and Yogyakrata.

General Details

Known officially as the Republic of Indonesia, the country is the world's largest island country with over seventeen thousand islands spread over nearly 2 million suqare kilometers. The country borders Pupua New Guine, East Timor, Malaysia and other neighbour countries include Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Australia and others. Having two seasons, wet and dry with no summer or winter, Indonesia's climate is tropical.

Indonesia is a republic with a presidential system and since 1999, the country has had a multi-party system. The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is the party of the current President, Joko Widodo. While the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) is the third lardest polictical party.

Population

Over 261 million people and is the world's 4th most populous country. Java, the world's most pupulous island is home to over 50% of the country's population,

Country Information

Indonesia has 34 provinces of which 5 have special status. Provinces are made up of regencies and cities that have their own local governments and parliamentary bodies.​ A province is headed by a governor and each province has its own regional assembly.

The 5 special status provinces are:

1) Aceh

2) Yogyakarta Special Region

3) Papua

4) West Papua

5) Jarkarta Special Captial Region

The order of governance is as follows:

First Level - Province

Second Level - Regency (kabupaten) and City (kota)

Third Level - Sub-District (kecamatan) or District (distrik)

Fourth Level - Village (desa)

Urban Centres are:

1) Jarkarta (Jarkata province) ~ 10 million

2) Surabaya (East Java) ~ 3.5 million

3) Bekasi (West Java) ~2.6 million 

4) Bandung (West Java) ~ 2.4 million

5) Medan (North Sumatra) ~ 2 million

6) Depok (West Java) ~ 2 million​

7) Tanggerang (Banten) ~ 2 million

8) Semarang (Central Java) ~ 1.6 million

9) Palembang (South Sumatr) ~ 1.5 million

10) South Tangerang (Banten) ~ 1.5 million

Languge

Indoneisa is very ethnically diverse with aroudn 300 distinct native ethnic groups. The Javanese group are the largest ethnic group while the Sundanese, Bataka and Madurese are the largest non-Javanese groups.

​

The country's official language is Indonesian which is a variant of Malay. 

Religion

While religious Freedom is stipulated in the constitution, the government only provides offically recognition for only six major religions: Islam, Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. 

​

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim majority country with 227 million adherents (201) with the overwhelming majority being Sunnis. Christians make up almost 10% of the popluation.
